âIT WAS A MISTAKE,â SRINIVAS HEARD HIMSELF SAYING, âif I had thought about it, Mr Platt, if I had considered it carefully as I should have done, I would have gone down on my knees to you. Well, perhaps not. It would have embarrassed you, and you would have gone away without hearing me out. Besides, kneeling is not our custom. We prostrate ourselves, you know. We throw ourselves at Godâs feet.â
âFeet are dreadful,â the woman said.
âThe feet are stone,â said Srinivas. âWhat else could they be? One cannot expect divinity to be made flesh before oneâs eyes. Whatever you may believe,â he said accommodatingly, âI could never believe that.â
âI do not believe,â the woman said.
âBesides, flesh,â said Srinivas, âwould never survive. The devotional needs of mankind, Mr Platt, are too destructive. Even stone does not last, you know. If you look you will see the toes are abridged. In older gods the toenails are eroded up to the quick. All done by touch, just fingertips touching.â
âHorrible,â said the woman, with a clatter.
âWhy, itâs you, Mrs Fletcher,â said Srinivas. âYouâve dropped your handbag. For some peculiar reason I thought you were Mr Platt, but of course he would never carry a handbag. Men donât, generally speaking, do they, Mrs Fletcher?â
âNo,â gasped Mrs Fletcher. âI was just going,â she said, âMrs Pickeringâs here with the doctor.â And fled.
When she was gone Srinivas went back to what was on his mind, but soon the door opened again.
âNothing but comings and goings,â complained Srinivas to this visitor.
âThat going was rather rapid,â said the visitor.
âThat was Mrs Fletcher,â said Srinivas. âShe is of a rather nervous disposition, it is difficult to know why. I was talking about Platt â you are not Platt, are you?â
âI am Dr Radcliffe,â
âYes, well, Platt was a man from my past life. An unusual man for his time, though at the time one didnât recognize it. I ought to have fallen at his feet, you know, touched his toes in gratitude.â
âYouâre lucky to have any toes left,â said Dr Radcliffe.
âI am no god,â Srinivas smiled faintly. âOnly gods have their toes nibbled away by the devout.â
âNo. Being human,â said the doctor, deftly winding bandages, âyou have to be content with frostbite.â
âKiss of death, touch of life, who knows?â Srinivas smiled cheerfully. âI am babbling,â he said. His father had been taken away for babbling.
âYou have a high temperature and are slightly delirious,â said Dr Radcliffe.â Your wife â â
âMy wife? Vasantha? Is she here?â Srinivas was very confused. His fatherâs fate had been written on buff-coloured paper that the telegraph office used. Vasanthaâs ashes he had himself consigned to the river.
âI am not his legal wife,â said Mrs Pickering.
âCommon law spouse,â said Srinivas, giggling.
âMy mistake,â said the doctor. âYou are, may I say, in highly capable hands.â
âWe are all in Godâs hands,â said Srinivas, piously.
âYes, well, Iâll look in again tomorrow,â said Dr Radcliffe. How close God lay under some surfaces, he thought with a flicker which could have been envy, though he also felt it was not really very suitable for this climate.
